Kindergarten, secular and hands-on
What is a good secular kindergarten homeschool curriculum?
A secular kindergarten curriculum should teach reading through systematic phonics, build number sense with real objects, and keep science and social studies hands-on, and Clareza Academy's kindergarten year is exactly four courses that do those things, with no religious content in any of them. Three of the four are led by you at the table, and the course says so plainly.
The four kindergarten courses
Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics, which runs from kindergarten to Grade 2. Numbers, Shapes, and Stories: Kindergarten Mathematics, counting to 100, comparing, adding within 10, shapes and measuring. Science Explorations for kindergarten to Grade 2: weather, ramps, seeds and sound. And My World, social studies for K-2: my family, my street, rules and maps.
Phonics runs on the screen, out loud
Every phonics question is read aloud by the app and answered by tapping, so nothing requires typing or reading instructions. A grown-up should stay close for the "say it out loud" moments.
Math, science and social studies are done with you
Kindergarten math is a short activity you lead with a provided script and objects or pictures. Science and social studies are hands-on activities with things most homes already have, ice cubes, a treasure map, a walk around the block, followed by a short read-aloud tap game for your child. Science and social studies lessons list what they need before you start.
A free phonics unit to print first
Learning to Read, Unit 1, First Sounds, First Words, is a free PDF at /free/learning-to-read: six lessons covering every letter sound, with a script for the parent, a page to read together and a practice sheet for each. No email and no account.
What it costs
$29 a month covers every child in the household, so a kindergartner and an older sibling are one price. The first 30 days are free; a card is taken and nothing is charged until day 30.
What this is not
- It is not hands-off. Phonics is the one kindergarten subject that runs mostly on its own; math, science and social studies need you.
- It does not replace read-alouds, play and time outside. The kindergarten page says so directly, and no screen can.
- It is not accredited and it does not issue a diploma at any grade.
