The first sentences, K-2
How do I teach my kindergartner or first grader to write a sentence on their own?
Have them say the sentence out loud first, count the words on their fingers, then write one word at a time while sounding it out, and let spelling be imperfect for now. Clareza Academy has no writing lessons before Grade 3, so this page is general guidance.
Say it, count it, write it
Ask them to say the whole sentence. Draw a line for each word, then they fill in the lines, saying each word slowly to hear its sounds. Read it back together and add the capital letter and the full stop.
Make short sentences longer
A four-word sentence is a fine start. Ask who, did what, where and when, and add one answer at a time: "The dog ran" becomes "The dog ran to the park after lunch." A drawing first gives them something to say.
If writing is the wall
Write their words down for them now and then, so the ideas keep coming while the hand catches up. Short and often beats a page a day. Handwriting help is at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-handwriting-and-cursive.
What this is not
- Clareza has no writing lessons in K-2, and no handwriting course. K-2 reading is phonics.
- The phonics lessons have children break words into sounds out loud, which helps spelling, but they do not write sentences.
- Writing starts in Grade 3 English. More at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-writing-curriculum.

Questions parents ask
When should a child write sentences on their own?
It varies a lot. Many write simple sentences during first grade, with plenty of help before that.
Should I correct spelling in early writing?
Lightly. Fix one or two words, and praise the sounds they got right.
Does Clareza teach writing in first grade?
No. Reading in K to 2 is phonics. Writing lessons begin in Grade 3.
