ASL, heritage and other languages
How do I teach my child a second language other than Spanish, like ASL or our family's language?
Use the language every day with real people, through talk, songs, books and shows, because daily use matters more than any program. Clareza Academy does not teach ASL or any language other than Spanish, so this page is general advice.
A family or heritage language
Keep it the language of home, or of one parent. Video calls with relatives, books, music and shows in the language, and a weekend language school or community group all help. Keep speaking it even when your child answers in English.
ASL
ASL is its own language, with its own grammar, and any age can start. Learn as a family, ideally from Deaf teachers, through a community class or a video course, and go to local Deaf community events if you can.
Other languages
An online tutor or a co-op class gives your child someone to talk with, which apps alone cannot. For Spanish, Clareza has three courses, covered at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-spanish-curriculum.
What this is not
- Clareza teaches Spanish only, from Grade 6. There is no ASL, heritage-language or other language course.
- Every other course is taught in English.
- The advice on this page is general. For ASL or a family language, look to people and classes, not to Clareza.

Questions parents ask
At what age can a child start sign language?
Any age. Many families sign with babies and toddlers, and older children and parents can learn together.
Will two languages confuse my child?
Many children grow up with two or more languages. If you have concerns about speech, talk to your pediatrician or a speech-language pathologist.
Does Clareza teach any language besides Spanish?
No. Spanish is the only world language.
