Typing and keyboarding
When and how should my child learn to type?
Many families start typing around ages 7 to 9, once a child reads well and can reach the keys, with 10 to 15 minutes a day on a typing program, accuracy before speed. Clareza Academy does not teach typing.
How to practice
Start on the home row, keep eyes on the screen, and use all ten fingers from the start. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Many free typing sites and games work for a 6 year old or a 13 year old.
Before a test on a computer
Some tests are taken on a computer. Ask how your child's test is given, and if it is on screen, practice typing short answers for a few weeks before, so typing is not what slows them down.
Typing in Clareza
In kindergarten to Grade 5, Clara mostly offers answer buttons to tap. From Grade 6 she expects typed answers and reasoning, which is typing practice but not instruction. A parent can switch on Answer by tapping, or Answer out loud with the microphone switch.
What this is not
- There is no typing or keyboarding course in Clareza.
- Typing to Clara is not touch typing instruction. Use a typing program for that.
- The computer science course is about programming, not typing. See /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-computer-science-and-coding.

Not much before Grade 6, when typed answers begin. A parent can switch on Answer by tapping or Answer out loud at any grade.
