Grades 1 to 5, every core subject
Is there a complete secular homeschool curriculum for grades 1 to 5?
Yes: Clareza Academy covers grades 1 through 5 with a full year of reading, math, science and social studies at every grade, plus health, art, music and PE courses for grades 3 to 5, all secular and all readable in full before you pay anything.
Grades 1 and 2
Learning to Read takes a child from letter sounds to reading real sentences, and finishes in Grade 2 with long vowels and multisyllable words. Grade 1 math runs through addition and subtraction within 20; Grade 2 math teaches number, shape and measure with pictures before symbols. Science and social studies are the K-2 hands-on courses, which you lead, followed by a short read-aloud tap game.
Grade 3, where the lessons move to Clara
From third grade, Clara delivers the lessons in all four core subjects: Reading, Thinking, Writing; Number, Shape, and Pattern, with multiplication at its heart; Investigating Our World, the forces, life and Earth systems course; and Communities Near and Far. The parent's role shifts to checking the dashboard.
Grades 4 and 5
Grade 4 is Reading and Writing with Evidence, place value, operations and fractions, Energy, Waves, and Living Systems, and Regions of the United States. Grade 5 is Reading Closely, Writing Clearly, place value, parts and space, Matter, Systems, and the Sky, and The American Story Begins.
Health, art, music and PE for grades 3 to 5
Health for Grades 3-5, Seeing and Making (visual art), Making Music (music appreciation) and Physical Education for Grades 3-5. PE is deliberately off screen: it gives you a weekly plan of what to go and do.
Practice styles, including optional games
From Grade 3 a child can practise in different ways: Read & Recall, which every lesson has, a worked example or spotting the mistake where a lesson has one, or one of nine learning games. The games have timers, and some have lives. If they are not right for your child, the "No timers" Learning Support hides them.
What this is not
- Grades 1 and 2 are not fully independent. Science and social studies are activities you lead, and a young reader still needs you nearby.
- It is screen-based from Grade 3 on, apart from PE. A family that wants a mostly offline, book-based year should know that before starting.
- It is not accredited and it does not issue a diploma.

Questions parents ask
Does Clareza cover every subject for grades 1 to 5?
Reading, math, science and social studies at every grade from 1 to 5, plus health, art, music and PE courses for grades 3 to 5.
How much parent time does elementary school need?
More in Grades 1 and 2, where science and social studies are parent-led activities. From Grade 3, Clara delivers the lessons and a parent mostly checks the dashboard and helps when a child is stuck.
Is anything timed?
The optional learning games are: they use timers, and some use lives. Read & Recall, which every lesson has, is not. A parent can switch on "No timers" in Learning Supports, which hides the games.
How much is it for two or three children?
The same $29 a month. The price covers every child in the household.
