Grammar at home
How do I teach grammar at home, and does my child need a separate grammar program?
Most children learn grammar best a few rules at a time, inside their own writing, and many do not need a separate grammar program unless you want formal parts of speech or sentence diagramming. Clareza Academy teaches grammar inside its English writing units, not as its own course.
Teach it where it is used
Take a sentence your child wrote and ask what the naming words, doing words and describing words are. Fix one kind of mistake at a time, such as run ons or verb tense, until it sticks. Five or ten minutes is plenty.
When a separate program helps
If your child enjoys rules, if you want sentence diagramming, or if grammar mistakes keep getting in the way of good ideas, a short stand-alone grammar book or workbook on the side is a sensible add.
Where grammar sits in Clareza
Grade 3 English covers complete sentences, past, present and future tense, subject and verb agreement, joining ideas with conjunctions and combining short sentences. Grade 4 adds fixing run ons and fragments and punctuating dialogue. Later grades fix grammar inside writing lessons, and the full English sequence is at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-english-curriculum.
What this is not
- There is no separate grammar course, no unit on the parts of speech as a set, and no sentence diagramming.
- Grades 6 and 7 English have very little grammar on its own. A 6th grader who needs grammar practice needs something extra.
- Clara is an AI and can be wrong about a grammar point. Check her corrections now and then.

Questions parents ask
Does my child need a separate grammar curriculum?
Not always. Many children do well fixing grammar in their own writing. Add one if you want formal rules or diagramming.
How do I teach the parts of speech to a 9 year old?
Use their own sentences. Sort the words into naming, doing and describing words, then add the proper names: noun, verb, adjective.
Does Clareza teach grammar?
Inside English, yes, most of it in Grades 3 and 4. There is no stand-alone grammar course.
