Checking grade level
How do I know if my homeschooler is on grade level?
Compare what your child can do with what a grade-level scope and sequence expects, and if you want a score, use a nationally normed achievement test such as the Stanford, the Iowa (ITBS) or the CAT. Some states name these for homeschool testing. In Clareza Academy, a placement check suggests where to start in math and reading, and each skill is tracked until your child has mastered it.
Check skills, not a label
Read what a grade covers and ask whether your child can do it. Clareza's math and English follow the Common Core and its science follows NGSS, and every course is readable in full with no account.
Tests homeschoolers use
A nationally normed achievement test compares your child with others in the same grade. Some states require one, or an evaluation by a certified teacher, and others require nothing. See your state at /homeschooling-in.
What Clareza shows you
The placement check in the parent dashboard suggests a starting grade for math or reading, and you choose. After that, the dashboard shows what each child mastered and where they are stuck.
What this is not
- The placement check gives a starting point, not a test score or a grade-level label.
- Clareza is not a standardized test and does not replace one your state requires.
- Not accredited, and it does not issue a diploma.

Questions parents ask
What tests do homeschoolers use?
Often a nationally normed achievement test such as the Stanford, the Iowa (ITBS) or the CAT. Some states accept a teacher's evaluation of a portfolio instead.
Does Clareza have a placement test?
A placement check for math and reading, in the parent dashboard. It suggests where to start; you choose the grade.
What if my child is behind in one subject?
Start where they are. You can add a lower grade's course for that subject, and the placement check never uses the word "behind".
