A child behind grade level

What homeschool curriculum helps a child who is behind grade level?

A child who is behind needs a curriculum that lets them start at the level they are actually at and explains each mistake, and in Clareza Academy you set each child's grade yourself, by subject if you like, with a placement check for math and reading to suggest where to start.

Start where they are

You choose each child's grade and can change it at any time, and you can add individual courses from any grade. A Grade 6 child working on Grade 4 math and Grade 6 everything else is a normal setup.

A placement check, not a label

If you are not sure where to start, the placement check in the parent dashboard suggests a starting point for math or reading, such as a grade and unit. It uses a short checklist for kindergarten math, word cards for K-2 reading, and one question at a time in the grades above. It gives a starting point, never a score and never the word "behind".

Wrong answers get a reason

Clara reads the actual mistake and explains what went wrong rather than just marking it. Practice is scored on whether the skill is learned, and the dashboard shows you where your child is stuck.

Supports a parent can switch on

Learning Supports include pictures for math, a calculator, everything read aloud, hide scores, gentle and shorter feedback, skip and come back, and a first wrong try that does not count against them. You choose switches, never labels, and a diagnosis is never asked for.

What this is not

  • It is not tutoring by a person and it is not special education. There is no evaluation, no IEP and no therapy.
  • The placement result is a suggestion. Enrolment still opens at Unit 1 of the grade you choose.
  • A curriculum cannot close a gap on its own. A child who is behind still needs time, and often you beside them.

Before your child starts: what we collect and why

We collect only what it takes to teach your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers and progress, and their chat with Clara (written by Anthropic's AI, read aloud by OpenAI). Nobody trains AI on it or sells it, and you can see or delete it any time. You create your child's account yourself. Paying by card is how you give consent.

Read what we collect and why

Your consent is needed before we collect anything from your child, and we collect nothing without it. You create your child's account yourself; they never sign up alone.

  • What we collect from your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers, time on lessons and progress, and their chat with Clara. Used to run the lessons, build their transcript and show you how they are doing.
  • Who else handles it: Anthropic (an AI company) receives the chat text and the lesson, with your child's first name but no last name or account details, to write Clara's replies. That is how Clara works, so it is part of the service. If you switch on answering out loud for a child, their voice is turned into text on our own server and then discarded; it is never sent to another company. OpenAI turns lesson text and Clara's replies (which can include your child's first name) into the read-aloud voice. Our email provider sends you reports about your child. Nobody trains AI on your child's data, and nobody sells it.
  • Your rights: see everything collected from your child, have it deleted, or stop further collection at any time, from your account or by emailingour support address. If you refuse the AI sharing above, Clara cannot teach, so the service cannot run. Chats are deleted after 30 days.
  • Safety: if your child writes something suggesting they may be hurt or in danger, we email you and Clareza's owner the same day.

Paying by card is how you give consent. Full details, including how long we keep each thing: Privacy Policy (version 2026-10-05).

Questions parents ask

Can my child work below their grade level?

Yes. You set the grade for each child and can change it at any time, and you can add courses from any grade, so math can be a lower grade than the rest.

Is there a placement test?

There is a placement check for math and reading in the parent dashboard. It suggests a starting point; you choose the grade.

Will my child see that they are behind?

The placement result never uses the word "behind", and the Hide scores support removes percentages, grades and "struggling" labels from your child's screens.
