Chatbots in your homeschool
Should I use ChatGPT or other AI for homeschooling?
It can help, with care: a general chatbot like ChatGPT is useful to a parent for planning, ideas and practice questions, but it can state wrong facts with confidence and will do a child's work if asked, so check what it says and set clear rules before your child uses it.
Where it helps parents
Drafting a weekly plan, turning a topic your child loves into practice questions, explaining an idea you have forgotten, or rewriting a passage at an easier level. Treat what it gives you as a first draft to check.
Where it goes wrong
It can give a wrong answer, a wrong date or a made-up source, and sound just as sure as when it is right. It does not know your child or what they have already learned. Check any math it works out line by line.
If your child uses it
Check the tool's age rules first; many general chatbots set a minimum age in their terms, often 13. Keep use in a shared room, never share full names, addresses or photos, and agree that it can explain or quiz but not write the work. Ask your child to show you the conversation.
How Clareza is different
Clara, the teacher built into every lesson, is an AI too, but she teaches a fixed, published course rather than answering anything, and parents can read every conversation, kept for 30 days. More on what you can check at /homeschool-curriculum/is-an-ai-tutor-safe-for-kids.
What this is not
- Clara is an AI and can be wrong too. Read the conversations, and check work now and then.
- Clareza cannot stop a child using another chatbot for homework, and it does not watch other apps.
- This page is general advice. No one can promise any AI tool is safe for your child.

Questions parents ask
Is it cheating if my child uses ChatGPT?
It depends on your rules. Asking it to explain a step is like asking a tutor; having it write the answer is not learning. Decide before they start.
Can ChatGPT plan my homeschool year?
It can draft a plan, but it may skip skills or put them out of order. Check the draft against a scope and sequence for the grade.
Is AI safe for kids to use alone?
No tool can promise that. Check the age rules, keep it in a shared room, and read what was said.
Can my child learn to check what AI tells them?
Checking sources is a skill worth teaching. Clareza's Grade 7 course Finding, Judging, and Using Information teaches the SIFT method for judging web sources, and the same habits apply to a chatbot's claims.
