When to bring in help
Should I hire a tutor for my homeschooler?
Hire a tutor when one subject has been stuck for months, when it is a subject you cannot teach yourself, or when your child needs a specialist, such as a reading tutor trained in a structured method for dyslexia. For many other children, short daily practice at the right level is enough.
Signs a tutor will help
Your child has been stuck on the same skill for weeks, lessons in one subject end in arguments, or a high school course is beyond what you remember. A tutor can also take strain off the parent and child.
What to look for
Experience with your child's age and subject, a short trial session, a clear goal such as "reads Grade 2 books by spring," and regular updates to you. Ask for references, and keep sessions where you can hear them, at home or online.
Where Clareza fits
Clara, the teacher built into every lesson, explains each idea, asks your child to try it and explains the specific mistake. A stuck child can press Ask Clara on any lesson, and you can read their recent conversations. Some families use it in place of a tutor, others alongside one. What this is not
- Clara is an AI and can be wrong. She is not a human tutor, and there are no live sessions.
- Clareza is not Orton-Gillingham or a dyslexia program. A child with dyslexia may need a trained reading specialist.
- Clareza does not find, check or recommend local tutors.

Questions parents ask
How much does a homeschool tutor cost?
It varies widely by area, subject and training. Specialists usually cost more. Ask a few tutors before you choose.
What should I look for in a reading tutor for a 2nd grader?
Someone who teaches phonics directly and can tell you how they teach sounding out words, not only reading together.
Is Clareza a tutor?
It is a full curriculum with Clara, an AI, teaching each lesson. It is $29 a month for the household after 30 days free, not paid by the hour.
