Geography at home
How do I teach geography at home?
Start with maps your child actually uses, a wall map, a globe, puzzles and the places in the books you read, then add a course that teaches map skills and why people live where they do. Clareza Academy teaches geography inside social studies, with two courses named for it.
Everyday geography
Find every place you read about on a map. Plan a trip, real or pretend, with distances and a route. Map puzzles and atlas games are a good way to learn states and countries.
Kindergarten to Grade 4
K-2 My World has a Maps and Places unit you do together, such as a treasure map. Grade 3 has a Map and Globe Skills unit: directions, map keys, scale, continents and oceans. Grade 4, Regions of the United States, studies five US regions through their land, resources and people.
Grades 7 and 9
Grade 7 is World Geography and the Medieval World, each region through its geography first. Grade 9 World Geography covers latitude and longitude, map projections, population, trade and borders, then six world regions. History is covered at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-history-curriculum.
What this is not
- There is no states and capitals drill.
- Geography is part of social studies. There is no separate geography course for every grade.
- Clara is an AI and can be wrong about a fact. Keep a real atlas nearby.

Questions parents ask
What geography works for a 3rd grader?
Map skills: directions, map keys, scale, continents and oceans. That is the second unit of Clareza's Grade 3 social studies.
My 7th grader loves US geography. What can they use?
Atlases, map puzzles and road trip planning. In Clareza you can add a course from another grade, so the Grade 4 regions course is an option.
Is geography part of social studies?
Usually, and in Clareza it is, with Grade 7 and Grade 9 courses named for it.
