Apps, judged honestly
Which learning apps are worth using for homeschool?
The learning apps worth using start at your child's level, explain mistakes instead of only rewarding speed, show you what your child did, and have no ads or chat with strangers. Judge one by what your child can do after a week, not by how much they want to play it.
Five quick checks
Does it start where your child is? Does it explain a wrong answer? Can you see progress? Are there ads, in-app purchases or chat with strangers? What data does it collect, and can you delete it?
Free ones many families use
For young children, Khan Academy Kids and PBS KIDS Games are free. With a library card, your library's app, often Libby, lends ebooks and audiobooks. Khan Academy is free for older students' math practice.
Practice versus a whole curriculum
Most apps practise one skill or subject. That makes them a good supplement, but not a full year of school unless they teach every subject in order. There is more on mixing at /homeschool-curriculum/mixing-and-supplementing-homeschool-curricula.
Where Clareza fits
Clareza is a full K-12 curriculum that runs in a web browser, not a single-skill app. Kindergarten phonics and math run on screen and are read aloud. From Grade 3 there are optional learning games with timers, described at /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-curriculum-with-learning-games.
What Clareza does not do
- It is not free: $29 a month for the household after 30 days free, and a card is needed to start the trial.
- It needs an internet connection. There is no offline mode.
- Clara, the teacher built into every lesson, is an AI and can be wrong. Look at the work now and then yourself.
