Algebra I at home
What is a good Algebra 1 curriculum for homeschool?
One that teaches each step instead of only checking answers, covers linear equations, systems, inequalities, functions and quadratics, and lets your teen move on as soon as a skill is proven. Clareza Academy's Algebra I is a full-year course with 8 units and 70 skills.
What it covers
Linear relationships as rules, graphs and stories; systems of linear equations; inequalities and absolute value; function notation; quadratic functions and solving quadratic equations, including factoring; piecewise functions; and modeling with data, including linear regression.
You do not have to know algebra
Clara, the teacher built into every lesson, explains each idea, asks your teen to try it, and explains the specific mistake when an answer is wrong. You can read her recent conversations to see how it is going.
Before and after
Pre-Algebra in Grade 8 leads into it. After it come Geometry, then Algebra II, where exponential and logarithmic functions are taught in full, then Precalculus or Statistics.
What this is not
- It is not an honors or AP course, and Clareza is not accredited.
- Exponential functions appear only briefly in Algebra I. The full treatment is in Algebra II.
- Clara is an AI and can be wrong. There is no human algebra tutor or live class.

Questions parents ask
Is Algebra 1 a 9th grade course?
Usually, and in Clareza it is listed in Grade 9, but you can start it in Grade 8 or later.
Does it include quadratics?
Yes. Two units cover quadratic functions and solving quadratic equations, including factoring.
Does Algebra 1 count as a high school credit?
You decide the credit. The transcript shows hours against the usual 120 to 180 for a credit.
