The year on one page
How do I plan a homeschool year?
Set one or two goals per subject for each child, count the weeks you will school and mark the breaks, divide each curriculum into those weeks, and put two or three checkpoints on the calendar to see what is working. A plan that fits on one page is enough, and it will change.
Goals first
Write what you want each child to be able to do by the end of the year, such as "reads chapter books alone" or "knows the times tables". Keep it short. Fewer goals are easier to check.
Weeks and breaks
Many families plan about 36 weeks, or 180 days, with holidays and a spare week or two for illness. Some school all year with short breaks, see /homeschool-curriculum/year-round-homeschool-schedule. Some states set days or hours, so check yours at /homeschooling-in.
Divide each curriculum
Count the lessons in each book or course and divide by your weeks to get a weekly pace. With several curricula, do this for each one and list them on one page. Plan by week number, not date, so a sick day does not break the plan.
Checkpoints
Every 6 to 9 weeks, look at what is done, what is stuck and what your child dreads, then adjust. There is more on that at /homeschool-curriculum/how-to-know-if-your-homeschooler-is-on-track.
Where Clareza fits
Each course is already in teaching order, and its page in your parent account shows about how many lessons a week finish it in a 36-week year. The printable scope and sequence at /scope-and-sequence lists every unit, which helps when you plan around other curricula.
What Clareza does not do
- It does not set your goals or plan your calendar. You choose the days, the breaks and the checkpoints.
- Lessons are mastery-paced, so a child who needs longer on a skill finishes later than the weekly pace suggests.
- It does not plan or track curricula from other publishers.
