Beyond the four core subjects
Does an online homeschool curriculum include art, music, PE, Spanish and electives?
Clareza Academy does: alongside the core subjects it includes art, music, PE and health courses from Grade 3, Spanish from middle school through Spanish II, and high school electives such as Computer Science Principles, Personal Finance, Psychology, Speech and Philosophy, all in the same $29 a month family price.
Art and music
Seeing and Making, visual art for grades 3 to 5, and Making Music, music appreciation for grades 3 to 5. In Grade 7, an introduction to visual art and Listening Across Cultures, an introduction to music appreciation. In Grade 10, Seeing and Meaning, an art history course for the fine arts credit.
PE and health
Physical Education for grades 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12, and Physical Education II for grades 10 to 12. PE is deliberately off screen: each course gives a weekly plan of what to go and do. Health courses are for grades 3 to 5, middle school and Grade 9.
Spanish
¡Empecemos! Spanish for Middle School, then Spanish I and Spanish II in high school. In the language courses Clara also talks with your child in Spanish and English, using more Spanish as they cope.
Other electives
Home Base: Practical Arts and Life Skills (grades 6 to 8), research literacy for the web (Grade 7), Personal Finance (Grade 9), Computer Science Principles and Speech and Communication (Grade 10), Psychology and Creative Writing (Grade 11), and Philosophy and Logic (Grade 12).
What this is not
- There are no art or music courses for kindergarten to Grade 2, and no separate PE or health course for those grades.
- Spanish is the only world language.
- There is no instrument tuition or live coaching. PE is a plan you carry out, not a class someone runs.
