Working on their own

Is there a homeschool curriculum my child can do on their own?

From Grade 3 up, yes: in Clareza Academy, Clara teaches the lessons in every subject except PE and the practice grades itself, so a child can work on their own while you check the dashboard, but in kindergarten most subjects, and in Grades 1 and 2 about half, are activities a parent leads.

Grade 3 and up

Clara introduces each idea, asks the questions and explains each wrong answer. Grade 4 typically needs a parent for setup and the occasional stuck moment, and by middle school a parent's role is oversight rather than instruction.

Kindergarten to Grade 2

Phonics runs mostly on its own, read aloud and answered by tapping, and Grades 1 and 2 math move onto the screen within the first couple of days. Science and social studies, and kindergarten math, are activities you lead.

How you stay in the loop

The dashboard shows what each child worked on, what they mastered and where they are stuck, and you can read the whole conversation between Clara and your child for any lesson from the last 30 days.

Any time of day

There are no live classes and nothing to book, so lessons fit around a work shift, an evening or a weekend.

What this is not

  • It is not childcare or supervision. A young child still needs an adult in the house.
  • Independent is not zero time from you. Expect to review progress each week and sit with whatever your child got stuck on.
  • A child below roughly third grade who is still learning to read cannot run the science and social studies lessons alone.

Before your child starts: what we collect and why

We collect only what it takes to teach your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers and progress, and their chat with Clara (written by Anthropic's AI, read aloud by OpenAI). Nobody trains AI on it or sells it, and you can see or delete it any time. You create your child's account yourself. Paying by card is how you give consent.

Read what we collect and why

Your consent is needed before we collect anything from your child, and we collect nothing without it. You create your child's account yourself; they never sign up alone.

  • What we collect from your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers, time on lessons and progress, and their chat with Clara. Used to run the lessons, build their transcript and show you how they are doing.
  • Who else handles it: Anthropic (an AI company) receives the chat text and the lesson, with your child's first name but no last name or account details, to write Clara's replies. That is how Clara works, so it is part of the service. If you switch on answering out loud for a child, their voice is turned into text on our own server and then discarded; it is never sent to another company. OpenAI turns lesson text and Clara's replies (which can include your child's first name) into the read-aloud voice. Our email provider sends you reports about your child. Nobody trains AI on your child's data, and nobody sells it.
  • Your rights: see everything collected from your child, have it deleted, or stop further collection at any time, from your account or by emailingour support address. If you refuse the AI sharing above, Clara cannot teach, so the service cannot run. Chats are deleted after 30 days.
  • Safety: if your child writes something suggesting they may be hurt or in danger, we email you and Clareza's owner the same day.

Questions parents ask

At what age can a child do Clareza alone?

From about Grade 3, when Clara delivers the lessons in every subject except PE. Before that, phonics and Grades 1 and 2 math run mostly on their own, and the rest needs you.

Do I need to sit with my child?

Not for the instruction from Grade 3 on. Check the dashboard and the conversations afterwards, and help when a skill stalls.

Can I homeschool while working full time?

Many families do, and the age of the child matters most. There is a longer answer at /homeschooling-for/working-and-single-parents.
