The house and the meals
How do I keep up with housework and meals while homeschooling?
Most homeschool families keep the house going by lowering the bar a little, giving children real daily chores, and running a few simple routines, such as a short tidy after lessons and a repeating meal plan. A curriculum plays only a small part in this.
Chores are part of school
Young children can set the table, sort socks and feed a pet. Older children can do a load of laundry or cook one dinner a week. Many families count it as life skills.
A few routines, not a perfect system
A ten-minute tidy before lunch and after lessons, laundry on set days, and one bigger clean a week. When a routine falls apart, restart the smallest one first.
Meals on repeat
Two weeks of simple dinners on rotation, the same breakfasts and lunches most days, and a slow cooker or leftovers on busy days. Writing the list once saves deciding every night.
Use the independent stretch
When an older child is working on their own, that is a good window for a task. In Clareza, from about Grade 3 Clara teaches the lessons, and Home Base, a Grade 6 to 8 course at /courses/g7-home-base-practical-arts-and-life-skills, teaches cooking, mending and cleaning by doing them in your house.
What Clareza does not do
- It does nothing for housework, meals or household planning. It is a curriculum.
- It is not childcare. In K-2, science and social studies need you there, and a young child needs an adult nearby.
- If you feel worn down for weeks, see /homeschool-curriculum/homeschool-overwhelm-am-i-doing-enough.
