Good reader, weak speller
What spelling program works for a child who reads well but can't spell?
A child who reads well but cannot spell usually needs spelling taught directly, one sound pattern at a time, with short practice writing words you say aloud. Recognizing a word and producing it are different skills. Clareza Academy has no spelling course, so this page covers what usually helps and the small part Clareza plays.
Why good readers can still misspell
Reading lets a child use context and the shape of a word. Spelling needs every letter recalled with no clues, which is harder, so many children read well ahead of how they spell.
What usually helps
Teach one pattern at a time, such as silent e or a vowel team, and practise it by saying words while your child writes them. Keep a list of the words they miss and look for the pattern behind them.
Where Clareza fits
The K-2 phonics course teaches sound patterns such as silent e, vowel teams and bossy r, for reading. In any grade, the "Spelling never counts against them" support has Clara judge what your child meant and use their misspelled words, spelled correctly, in her reply.
What this is not
- Clareza has no spelling course, spelling lists or dictation. You would need a separate spelling program.
- In the phonics course your child taps printed words to show they can read them. They do not write them.
- Spelling that stays very hard despite good teaching can be a sign of dyslexia or dysgraphia. Ask your school district or an educational psychologist about an evaluation.

Questions parents ask
Does Clareza teach spelling?
Not as its own subject. The K-2 phonics course teaches spelling patterns for reading, with no spelling lists or dictation.
Will spelling mistakes count against my child in Clareza?
Not if you switch on "Spelling never counts against them". Clara then judges what your child meant.
Is my child dyslexic if they can't spell?
Not necessarily. Many good readers are weak spellers. Spelling trouble that lasts can be a sign of dyslexia or dysgraphia, so an evaluation is worth asking about.
