Evolution taught as science

A homeschool curriculum that teaches evolution

Clareza Academy, a secular K-12 homeschool curriculum, teaches evolution as a unit of its grade 9 biology course, aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and not presented alongside an alternative. Deep time and climate are taught the same way, as the scientific consensus. You do not have to take any of that on trust, because the course is readable in full before you pay.

Where evolution sits in the course

Grade 9 biology runs 11 units and 98 skills, from molecules and enzymes up through cells, energy, genetics, evolution, ecology and the human body, ending in a capstone where your child defends an argument about a real biological case. Evolution is a unit in that sequence, between genetics and ecology, not a footnote or an "alternative view" panel.

Built to NGSS, and it says so

Science follows the Next Generation Science Standards, and maths and English follow the Common Core. A curriculum built to NGSS has already made its decision about evolution, the age of the earth and climate, and cannot quietly hedge in the chapters.

Read the biology course before you buy

Every unit, skill and objective of the biology course is readable right now with no account and no card. The first unit, The Chemistry of Life, is also a free printable 61-page PDF with a short script for the parent, a page to read together and a practice sheet for each of its 8 lessons, with answers. It is not the evolution unit, but it shows you how the course is written.

The same stance in every subject

There is no religious content in any subject. Social studies has no religious framing and no providential history, and the reading has no devotional material. Religion appears where it is the subject, as history. The secular curriculum page goes through this subject by subject.

A whole curriculum, not a science patch

The K-12 catalog is 71 courses: 14 maths, 12 English, 11 science, 14 social studies, plus health, PE, art, music, computer science and world languages. You are not bolting a secular science course onto somebody else's year.

What this is not

  • It is not anti-religious. Religion is taught in history because it is most of history. What it does not do is teach any faith as fact, in any subject.
  • It does not present creationism or intelligent design as an alternative view. If you want both presented side by side, this is not the curriculum for you.
  • This page describes the grade 9 biology course. For what the younger grades cover in science, read those courses directly; they are open in full too.
  • It is not accredited and does not issue a diploma. It prints a transcript of what was taught and mastered.
