Homeschooling in South Carolina
Three routes, and the one you pick decides who holds you to account: your district, SCAIHS, or an approved association.
Getting started (notice)
under option one you seek approval from your local school district. Under option two you join the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools. Under option three you join any association with at least fifty member families that the state recognises. Most families use option three.
Required subjects
reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, and in grades 7 to 12 also composition and literature, across at least 180 days a year.
Records you must keep
a plan book, diary or record of subjects taught and activities, a portfolio of the child's work, and a record of academic progress. Your association may ask for more.
Testing / evaluation
no state testing mandate under options two and three. Districts may require standardized testing under option one.
Parent qualifications
a high school diploma or GED.
